ementia and depression are common problems for older

patients. An increasing body of literature suggests that

depression is a risk factor for both Alzheimer’s disease and

Vascular Dementia. The relationship between depression

and dementia complicated by overlapping symptoms and

confusion over cause and effect. This review will focus

on the complex relationship between the two conditions

including a discussion of the studies that demonstrate a

causal association, the epidemiology of the two and some of

the brain changes that occur with both conditions.

Speaker Biography

Timothy Lau is a distinguished teacher, faculty of medicine and associate professor for

the department of psychiatry in the University of Ottawa.
