iabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a preventable and life-threatening
complication of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. It is a metabolic state with a
diagnostic triad of hyperglycaemia, acidosis and ketonuria. In this tragic case,
a young 23year old patient presented to the Emergency Department with
severe diabetic ketoacidosis, septic shock and intra-uterine death at 33/40 –
and was subsequently managed in the Intensive Care Unit. We examine the
precipitating biopsychosocial factors contributing to this unfortunate event,
discuss the pathophysiology and complications of diabetic ketoacidosis, and
highlight recent advancements in the management of this common medical
emergency.
