Patient in shock, a challenge in the ER

T

he patients in shock are a challenge for every emergency physician, who treats adults or children. Most of the time, the

main trouble is not thinking about it, which makes quite difficult to diagnosis a shock if you did not think about it before.

We should change the way of thinking about the shock: most of the patients who later developed a shock comes to the ER by

themselves, not using an ambulance and the most frequent symptom is discomfort, in adults and in the pediatrician patients

goes from crying to somnolence. There is not a complementary test to diagnosis it so that, as you can imagine it is not easy to

identify, start the treatment, the right one as soon as possible, because Shock is a time dependent disease, the later you identify

it, the worst for the patient. That is why, Emergency Physicians from all over the world, spend a time together, face to face,

at least five times per year and by email or Skype more frequently, we must do our best to improve the management of these

patients in order to diminish the high rate of mortality and morbidity they present nowadays. Working hard together will make

the change we need!
