Pain Signaling

Pain is the main reason patients receive medical care. The treatment of pain, especially the chronic pain associated with cancer and damage to the nervous system, is currently inadequate. The lack of effective analgesics is partly due to the fact that the pain signalling mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Over the recent years, many channels, receptors, and regulatory proteins involved in pain pathways have been identified, and novel pain signalling mechanisms and pathways at peripheral and spinal levels have been discovered.  It is expected that further understanding of the molecular mechanisms of pain may provide hope for the future development of pain killers.
