Bipolar disorder, previously known as manicression, is a mood disorder characterized by periods of stress and high feelings. When high feelings are difficult or associated with psychosis, they are called mania; if it is too small, it is called hypomania. During feelings, a person behaves or feels very powerful, happy or angry. Individuals often make compelling decisions without regard to consequences. There is usually a reduced need for sleep during the manic phase. In times of oppression, people may have tears, a negative outlook on life, and a negative view of others. The risk of suicide is high; over a 20-year period 6% of people died by suicide, and 30- 40% involved self-harm. Other mental health issues, such as mental disorders and substance use disorders, are commonly associated with bipolar disorder.
