Functional foods are foods that deliver additional or enhanced benefits over and above their basic nutritional value and have a potentially positive effect on health. Some functional foods say they promote optimal health and help reduce the risk of disease; a familiar example of a functional food is prebiotics, or plant stanols and sterols, Functional foods are usually similar to foods that are consumed as part of our usual diet e.g. yogurt, drinks, bread.
