The diagnosis of a disease whose symptoms are yet to be manifested involves the study of immunohistochemistry and other histopathological factors. The importance of such procedures becomes ever so evident during the diagnosis of non-infectious cellular outgrowths or tumors. In such cases, the surgeon or the interventional radiologist extracts whole or portion of the abnormal outgrowth and sends it for further analysis. These specialized analyses include microscopic, histological, cytological and even molecular analysis (genomic/proteomic profiling), the results of which may be used to validate or negate the possibility of occurrence of cancer. Furthermore, biopsy also helps in estimating the exact stage of the disease progression, which is essential for selecting a suitable treatment/management regimen.
