Appendicitis is a painful medical condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed and filled with pus, a fluid made up of dead cells and inflammatory tissue that often results from an infection. This can lead to peritonitis, a serious inflammation of the abdominal cavitys lining (the peritoneum) that can be fatal unless it is treated quickly with strong antibiotics. Inflammation of this abdominal organ can be a serious and life-threatening condition.
