Abstract

The purpose in this study is to evaluate of the pre-operative knowledge levels and feelings of patients’ in surgical clinics. The research is a cross-sectional and descriptive research. The data of the study were collected by the student nurses during the surgical application from Feb’ 15 to May’ 15, 2016. In the collection of the data, a questionnaire form was used to evaluate the socio-demographic questionnaire, pre-operative knowledge levels of the patients and what they felt. The data were evaluated with number and percent. It was determined that 92% of the surgical patients were informed by the specialist physician about the patients should be operated, 72% received information from the specialist physician about the surgery and 59% of the patients received preliminary information about the preparations and the operations by the nurse. In addition, preoperatively, 41% of the surgical patients, in particular, felt fear and 31% were excited. As a result, it was determined that the majority of the patients were informed before the operation. But it is thought that the fear and excitement rates of the patients are high, and we think that the nurses have a duty and responsibility in this matter beecause fear and excitement can increase the stress level of the patient. For this reason, the patient may show complications and late healing during and after surgery. It is thought that the fear and excitement of the patients should be discussed in detail in the preoperative surgical care plan.
