The goal of this lecture is to increase your understanding of common dental emergencies, which are seen frequently in physician offices, clinics, remote areas, emergency rooms and about anywhere patients present for healthcare. You should feel comfortable treating most dental and related infections and trauma. In this lecture we will review dental anatomy, including the dental formula, review causes of facial and dental pain, look at dental trauma, understand the common causes of odontogenic pain, review peridontal problems and present appropriate treatment options.
Alan Hodgdon is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine. He previously served as the Executive Medical Director of an Emergency Medicine Enhancement Project located in Doha, Qatar. The projects' broad goals were to improve emergency care in the two major hospitals of Qatar and in the prehospital system. He attended the University of Pittsburgh Residency in Emergency Medicine. Following completion of his residency, he began work as an emergency physician at UPMC Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. He completed a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh in 2012. Dr. Hodgdon is actively involved with global medicine and travels overseas frequently. He has written extensively and was a contributing editor to Emergency Medical Clinics of North America, writing the chapter “Dental and Related Infections”.
