Traditional Healthcare Practices of Wild Plants by Gond Tribal Community in Jharkhand, India

Abstract

The state of Jharkhand is very rich in natural resources. 29.6 % area of Jharkhand is covered by the dense forest, 82% of area falls under the protected forests and 17.5% of the land falls under reserve forests. The belt is also known as tribal belt of India. The Jharkhand state is very rich in plant diversity and especially in medicinal plants. The floras of Jharkhand are a delight to the biologists, its people even more so to the anthropologists and other social scientists. Total thirty tribal communities were categorized by Vidyarthi, the study focus on selected Gond tribal community. The population of Gond community is less compare to other tribal communities. The Gond tribal community is completely dependent of raw material of forest and the community best understanding about importance of forest. The community is fully aware about medicinal properties of wild plants including trees, shrubs, herbs and climbers. Best interest of mature Gond peoples in traditional healthcare practices of wild plants. The region of Jharkhand is very rich in wild medicinal plants and the communities directly use such types of wild plants for the treatment of many diseases. The investigation is step towards documenting the traditional healthcare practices of wild medicinal plants by Gond tribal community which could be used for quantification of medicinal and food nutrient intake in this community. The investigation was based on interviews of the old age Gond members. To the best of our traditional knowledge, no previous such type of study has looked at the traditional knowledge and uses based aspects of the traditional healthcare practices of wild medicinal plants in the tribals of the Jharkhand state.
