One of the most common orthopedic surgery is total knee arthroplasty (TKA). TKA has been followed by moderate or severe postoperative pain. Different therapeutic modalities in postoperative pain control have been proposed in aim to affect early postoperative rehabilitation and patient satisfaction. The multimodal concept in postoperative pain control in TKA is a therapeutic approach that consists of the administration of two or more drugs that act by different mechanisms for providing analgesia. These drugs may be administered via the same or by different routes in the aim to improve pain relief reducing opioid requirements and opioid-related adverse effects. The multimodal concept in postoperative pain control after TKA includes preemptive analgesia, patient-controlled analgesia, local infiltration analgesia, peripheral nerve blocks, and oral medications. Multimodal analgesia is superior in pain relief, reducing opioid consumption and related adverse effects providing early rehabilitation and recovery after TKA.
