Abstract

Synthesis and Biological Activity of Novel Azetidinones

2-(1, 3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl) acetohydrazide (1) undergoes facile condensation with aromatic aldehydes to afford the corresponding 2-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)-N'-arylideneacetohydrazide (2a-h) in good yields. Cyclocondensation of compounds (2a-h) with chloro acetyl chloride yields N-(3-chloro-2-aryl-4- oxoazetidin-1-yl)-2-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)acetamide (3a-h). The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of analytical and spectral data. The newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities.
