Abstract

Removal of reactive orange 16 from aqueous solutions using activated carbon and polypyrrole coated Sawdust composite prepared from Cordia sebestena

Activated carbon (CSAC) and Polypyrrole coated sawdust composite (PPy/SD) were prepared from the fruit of the gardening plant material Cordia Sebestena (CS). Activated carbon prepared through chemical impregnation with H3PO4 solution followed by thermal activation. This study investigates the adsorption behaviour of activated carbon and polypyrrole coated sawdust composite towards Reactive Orange 16 (anionic-reactive dye). Various experiments have been carried out using batch adsorption technique to study the effects of the main parameters such as contact time, initial dye concentration, pH and temperature. The morphology of adsorbents was studied by SEM and FTIR. The kinetic data was studied using pseudo first order, second order, elovich and intra particle diffusion models to understand the reaction mechanism. The isotherm data was studied using Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin and Dubinin-Reduskevich models. Thermodynamic parameters were also calculated. The performance of CSAC was compared with PPy/SD. The data obtained confirmed that PPy/SD has been found a very efficient adsorbent for the adsorption of RO16 as compared with CSAC.
