Abstract

Phytochemical screening and nutrient analysis of Phyllanthus amarus

This study was carried out to evaluate the phytochemical properties and nutrient analysis of Phyllanthus amarus. The whole plant was analysed for proximate and mineral element compositions. The results indicate that the plant contains useful nutrients for use in dietary preparations of functional foods. Carbohydrate (65.28 ± 0.04%) was found to present in highest concentration followed by crude proteins (10.50 ± 0.15%). Among the mineral elements determined, Calcium was present in the highest concentration (2209 ± 0.50ppm) while Chromium was the least (15.25 ± 0.13ppm). The phytochemical screening of the plant extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, glycosides, tannins, steroids, terpenes, flavonoids and carbohydrate.
