Statins are a class of drugs often prescribed by doctors to help lower cholesterol levels in the blood. By lowering the levels, they help prevent heartattacks and stroke. There are various forms of statins, some of which include atorvastatin, fluvastatin and simavastatin. Combination preparations of a statin and another agent, such as ezetimibe/simvastatin, are also available. Statin drugs work by blocking the action of the liver enzyme that is responsible for producing cholesterol.
