We looked at the disinfection practices of nebulizers in the hospital and on a domiciliary basis. These were done as two different studies. The 1st study looked at cleanliness and disinfection of nebulizer machine and their accessories when they were used on a daily basis in hospitalized patients. We looked at swabs taken from the nebulizer and its accessories in a pre-defined manner (decided with the help of our Microbiologist) and we sent sputum from the admitted patient at the same time. We looked for any microbiological growth in these samples and also in the sputum and analyzed the results. The results from the study showed that 20% of the samples sent from the nebulizer machine and accessories had a positive microbiological culture. 30% of the sputum cultures also turned out to be positive.
