Influence of salt stress on enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant activity during hardening of a vegetatively propagated mangrove species Excoecaria agallocha L.

The present study examined effect of salt (NaCl) on enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant activity in vegetatively propagated plantlets of Excoecaria agallocha, a mangrove species, during hardening. The propagated plantlets were exposed to 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mM NaCl for 28 days, where the enzymatic and non-enzymatic parameters were observed at zero, 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th day of NaCl treatment. Total protein, Peroxidase (POX), Catalase (CAT), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Ascorbate peroxidase (APX), total phenol, total flavonoid and reducing power activity varied in response to different concentrations of NaCl. Highest total protein content was recorded in 100 mM NaCl treated plantlets. Out of both enzymatic and non-enzymatic analysis, Peroxidase enzyme at 14th day and Ascorbate peroxidase at 7th day was found as markers against 200 mM NaCl stress. This piece of work thus provides a preliminary understanding on the effect of salt stress on enzymatic and non-enzymatic alteration in vegetatively propagated Excoecaria agallocha plantlets during hardening.
