The elderlypopulationhasincreasedexponentially in recentdecades. Withthis, manyelderlypeopleunabletoliveindependently start tolive in long-terminstitutions. Evidencesuggeststhatepigeneticfactors, mainlyreducedlevelsofhistoneacetylation and theBrainDerivedNeurotrophicFactor (BDNF) in thehippocampus, are associatedwiththeagingprocess and theemergenceofneurodegenerativediseases. The practiceofphysicalexerciseis a non-pharmacologicalstrategycapableofminimizing and preventingcognitiveimpairment, improvingmemory and learning processes. Studiesdemonstratethebenefitsofthispractice in institutionalizedelderlypeople, butthe molecular mechanismsinvolved are still unclear.
