Impact of periodontal infection on systemic disease

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease initiated by bacterial pathogens. Certain systemic conditions may affect the initiation and progression of gingivitis and periodontitis. On the other hand, the presence of untreated periodontitis may influence to many systemic diseases such as coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, stroke,diabetes mellitus, preterm-low-birth-weight-infants (pregnancy outcome), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and acute respiration infection. Treating periodontal infection and maintain good oral hygiene can help in maintaining healthy body.
