Abstract

How is communication disorders in children addressed? A literature review of regional differences in definition, identification and intervention standards, tools and practices within china and between china and global communities

This literature review analyzed the changes in the concept of children’s communication disorder (CCD), and the research progress of its early identification from multiple regions, countries and international authoritative bodies, including IALP, ASHA, WHO, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and EU to explore further development directions. With over 26 million children under age 12 with potential communication disorder and delay within China alone, the discrepency in definition, use of tools and expertise permeation local, regional and nationally meant a great disparity in how our children with communication disorder and delay are currently identified and treated. This review and comparison showed where the domestic concept of CCD, diagnostic criteria and evaluation tools would have room for development, which is of significance and of opportunity for improving the capabilities of related professional diagnosis, treatment and intervention services and serve as a reference for the professional community, both domestically in China and internationally.
