Gastric Perforation Following Endoscopic Intragastric Balloon Insertion; Case Report and Literature Review

Endoscopic Intragastric balloon placement is a well-known minimally invasive procedure used for the treatment of obesity. Recently, this procedure became very popular as a substitute for bariatric surgery. Although it is known as a safe procedure, life threatening complications,such as gastrointestinal hemorrhage, obstruction or perforation may occur. Herein, we describe a case of a young healthy patient, who presented with diffuse peritonitis due to acute gastric perforation 5 weeks after intragastric balloon administration. Upon entering the abdomen with diagnostic laparoscopy, a 4 mm perforation on the anterior wall of the stomach was detected. Following deflation of the
balloon, intra-operative upper endoscopic removal of the balloon was attempted and failed. Gastrotomy and laparosccopic removal of the balloon along with closure of the gastrotomy by stapler line was done.
