Diversity of fish species in Nigoni suti (rivulet), Bakulguri, Dhakuakhana, Lakhimpur, Assam, India

Fishes make up more than half of the total number of vertebrates in the world. Fishes have occupied almost all aquatic habitats . India is one of the country which is rich in aquatic bio-resources. Assam is blessed by the presence of wild climate and abundance of ornamental fishes in nature and contribute lion’s share of total ichthyo species in North Eastern Region of India. Already 217 fish species belonging to 136 genera has been identified in Assam which about 150 species have reported to be of ornamental value and in case of more than 50 species overseas demand has been established. Some of the commercially important species are: Chitala chitala, Notopterus notopterus, Channa striatus, Chaca chaca, Nemacheilus botia, Glossogobius giuris, Lepidocephalous guntea, Aborichthyes elongatus, Nandus nandus etc.
